The Fassifern and Scenic Rim community is being urged join the fight against domestic violence.
Carinity Fassifern Community Centre in Boonah is running events from May 27-29 to tie in with Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
Samantha Caves, Community Development Coordinator at Carinity Fassifern Community Centre, says that domestic violence is never okay.
“Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and to send a clear message that domestic violence in families and homes will not be tolerated,” Sam says.
Carinity Fassifern Community Centre is facilitating an art exhibition and a candle vigil to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence prevention.
The art competition will feature prizes for 5-11 years, 12-17 years and 18 years plus age groups for artworks which best convey the theme “Not Now, Not Ever. Together.”
Artwork can be submitted at Carinity Fassifern Community Centre in person or by emailing to [email protected] by Wednesday May 27 at 12:30pm.
Entrants will receive a “Not Now, Not Ever. Together” handbag made of recycled denim and containing domestic violence information, tea bags, socks, vouchers, lip balm and tissues.
Locals are also invited to collect a candle from the community centre at Little High Street in Boonah, then light their candle at home and join in prayer for victims of domestic abuse on Friday May 29 at 4pm.
“While we are unable to meet face-to-face as a large group due to social restrictions, we are able to join in spirit, support and pray for families affected by domestic violence,” Sam says.
“We would like to see the whole community from all age groups engage in these events in support of preventing violence in the home.”
