Caught on Western Port

Victoria Police Heavy Vehicle Unit officers detected a Mercedes sedan travelling at 165 km/h along the Western Port Highway in Somerville this evening.

It is alleged the AMG sedan was seen accelerating past a line of northbound traffic in a 100km/h zone.

The sedan was intercepted and the driver, a 49-year-old man from Doncaster, was interviewed in relation to the excessive speed.

The Mercedes was impounded for 30 days with costs of $895.00 and the driver is expected to appear at a Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

This impound forms part of Operation Artemis, a road policing operation with a focus on keeping our community safe on the roads during the school holiday period.

The operation aims to target the key causes of road trauma, particularly speeding, drink & drug driving and driver distraction.

Operation Artemis commenced at the opening of the Victorian ski season last weekend and will conclude at the end of the Victorian school holiday period on Sunday night 12th July, 2020.
