Centrelink reprieve welcomed

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to grant a six-month extension to Mornington Centrelink.

The decision means the closure of the joint Centrelink and Medicare office in Main Street, Mornington will not now go ahead this week as planned.

Council was deeply concerned by the impending closure and what impact it would have on our community. The announcement of this extension is an extremely positive development, particularly in light of the unprecedented health, social and economic challenge we all face at this time.

Mornington Peninsula Mayor Sam Hearn said: “We will continue to advocate for the retention of this essential service beyond this reprieve, but for now we are very relieved that the closure has been averted.

“You only had to look at the queues forming outside our local Centrelink offices in recent days to know that closing Mornington would have been disastrous.”
