Chance to recognise those who give back

Darwin City Council

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis has urged people to consider nominating exceptional members of the community for City of Darwin’s 2023 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards.

“There are so many outstanding people in Darwin giving so much to our community,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“Most people who contribute to the greater good of the community are selfless and not seeking acknowledgment, or recognition of any kind.

“But I have always felt those who give back to their community should have their efforts acknowledged, and that’s what City of Darwin’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards are for.”

Current Darwin Citizen of the Year, Nicole Brown said winning the award was a source of great pride.

“You don’t do things in the community for the accolades,” Ms Brown said.

“But it’s a great thing to be recognised by your community and your peers. It’s such an amazing community that we’re part of and everyone is making a difference.”

Ms Brown urged people considering nominating a relative, friend, colleague or someone making an outstanding contribution in the community to get in before the 30 November deadline.

The awards are for Darwin residents who have made a noteworthy contribution over the previous 12 months. People can be recognised for an outstanding service to the community, the lives of others, if they are a positive role model, a quiet achiever, or a community leader. The award categories are:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Activity of the Year.
