Changes at Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing

Vic Department of Transport

The dangerous and congested level crossing at Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing will be gone for good on 9 December, and a new road bridge will open, directly connecting the Princes Highway to Old Geelong Road.

By 5am on Thursday, drivers will be able to use the new road bridge to get across the rail line and Old Geelong Road will close permanently at the former level crossing site.

The Princes Freeway city-bound exit ramp to Hoppers Crossing will also reopen, connecting motorists from the south-west directly with Old Geelong Road and Princes Highway using the new road bridge intersection.

This project will benefit more than 18,000 drivers who use this section of Old Geelong Road each day, offering them a more reliable journey, particularly in morning peak when boom gates were previously down for a third of the time.

The boom gates at this location will be removed at a later stage to minimise disruption to train passengers and the community.

Pedestrians and cyclists will continue to cross the rail line at Old Geelong Road until construction on the new pedestrian and cyclist overpass at Hoppers Crossing Station is complete in 2022.
