The Community Housing Industry Association Victoria warmly welcomes news that an agreement has been reached to pass landmark legislation in the Senate later this week establishing the Housing Australia Future Fund.
CHIA Vic also welcomes the immediate additional direct investment of $1 billion to build new public and community homes through the National Housing Infrastructure Facility.
CHIA Vic’s acting CEO Jess Pomeroy said this historic reform to Australia’s housing system will create the foundation for an ongoing pipeline of social and affordable housing delivery across Victoria and the country.
“We congratulate the Government and Senate crossbench for working together to reach agreement on this legislation, which is desperately needed to address the growing housing crisis across Australia, and to reverse the decades-long decline in the proportion of social housing.
“We also congratulate advocates across the housing, homelessness and social services sectors, who have worked tirelessly to have this important issue resolved and meaningful reforms and investments made.
“In particular, we recognise the efforts of the national Community Housing Industry Association and National Shelter for their essential role in reaching this momentous outcome.
“Victoria and Australia’s housing challenges will not be met by these commitments alone, and we know there is more work to be done. But this historic reform is a step in the right direction.
“We look forward to working with the Commonwealth and Victorian governments, and our members in the Victorian community housing sector, to boost the supply of social housing and help give all Victorians the dignity of an appropriate, secure and affordable home.”
