Child dies, two remain in hospital after crash in Riverina region, NSW

A child has died in hospital following a two-vehicle crash in the state’s Riverina region at the weekend.

Just after 3pm on Saturday (16 May 2020), emergency services were called to the Snowy Mountains Highway in Tumut, about 100km east of Wagga Wagga, following reports of a crash involving a Subaru Liberty sedan and a truck.

The truck driver, a 58-year-old man, was not injured and underwent mandatory testing at hospital.

The driver of the sedan, a 29-year-old woman, and her two passengers, an 11-year-old girl and a four-year-old girl, were treated for serious head injuries on scene, before they were all airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The woman was taken to Canberra Hospital, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

The two girls were transported to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The four-year-old girl remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Earlier this afternoon (Monday 18 May 2020), the 11-year-old girl passed away in hospital.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

As their inquiries continue, investigators urge any witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision in the area at the time to come forward.
