Access to cultural experiences and arts programs across the country are now available to people with disability at the click of a mouse.
The online platform called Choose Art is a national arts directory for inclusive and accessible programs, opportunities and events.
Recently launched by Arts Access Victoria, who developed the platform, Choose Art maps regional and metropolitan arts programs and experiences.
Users can search by accessibility, location and art form. The website includes ‘Recite Me’ software, which enables users to access the website in a way that suits them and translates website text into other languages.
Almost 1 in 5 Australians live with disability. During the 2018 national consultation on arts and disability almost half the respondents said that being able to find out information about accessibility before arriving at an event makes the experience much easier.
Arts organisations are encouraged to list their inclusive arts programs and events on Choose Art.
The platform will help individuals and their support networks, such as NDIS Local Area Coordinators, to easily find activities.
The Australian Government and state and territory governments contributed $250,000 to the rollout of Choose Art (formerly called ARTfinder National).
The funding was provided under the National Arts and Disability Strategy, which is an initiative of the Meeting of Cultural Ministers.
