Christmas lights map and competition to brighten community spirits

The countdown to Christmas is on and locals across the Mildura region are urged to light up their homes, workplaces and businesses to brighten community spirits as the end of the year draws near.

Mildura Rural City Council has partnered with Sunraysia Daily to launch the 2020 Christmas Lights Map and Competition – an initiative aimed at sparking joy and celebrating all that is great about our community.

Locals can register their address on a virtual Christmas Lights Map on the Mildura Rural City Council website. The Map will be updated daily and published in the Sunraysia Daily in the lead up to the New Year, giving everyone the chance to find the best local light displays to view.

All registered addresses will also be in the running to win a $500 voucher at the local business of their choice with People’s Choice and Mayor’s Choice Awards up for grabs. Everyone is invited to cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award online.

Mildura Mayor Jason Modica said the initiative aimed to build community connection and spark joy following the end of the one of the most challenging years in history.

“Much of 2020 has been dominated by challenges and setbacks. We wanted to do something positive that will connect our community and create a sense of optimism as we look ahead to 2021,” Cr Modica said.

“Driving around to look at Christmas light displays is a really beautiful tradition for many local families so creating a map and competition will hopefully enhance that for everyone.”

Sunraysia Daily General Manager Glenn Robinson said the newspaper had been publishing an annual Christmas Lights Map for more than a decade and was excited to partner with Mildura Rural City Council to make it happen again this year.

“We will publish the map every Wednesday and Saturday in our print edition from now until January 2 and look forward to seeing lots of addresses added to it in the coming days.

“This is more than just a map and a competition, it’s about supporting the local community and showcasing the genuine joy the festive season generates.”

Everyone touring Christmas lights is reminded to stay safe. Please take care on the roads and maintain social distancing in line with current COVID Safe restrictions.
