City extends support for retail this Christmas

It’s going to be a very merry Christmas, and a happy new year in the City of Perth this year.

The City will inject almost one and a half million dollars to extend the Christmas Retail Campaign into the new year to attract more vibrancy and people to the heart of the city.

Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said commissioners have approved a further $1,435,000 investment into retail sector support for the Christmas campaign, to extend Christmas events and promotions into the new year.

“The City has taken into account feedback received from our retail forums and is committed to working together with CBD retailers,” Chair Commissioner Hammond said.

“We’re implementing a holistic approach that will include three-hour free parking to compete with metropolitan shopping centres, entertaining Christmas experiences, and a strong marketing and promotions campaign from 15 November 2019 through to 23 January 2020.

“We’re also looking to streamline retail, City of Perth and State Government programs to create better outcomes for the local economy.

The expansion plans are in addition to activations already committed to by the City, which include:

• Christmas Lights Trail.

• Christmas Projections on St Georges Cathedral.

• Nativity Concert.

• Christmas Pageant sponsorship.

• Christmas themed live music performances and movies.

• Half a million Christmas lights and 550 individual decorations.

“The City recognises retailers are facing challenging economic times, and this extra investment brings the City’s commitment to Christmas activation and promotion to five million dollars in 2019,” Chair Commissioner Hammond said.

“This project plan will be workshopped in collaboration with retailers at the next forum, as the City aims to convert the desires of retailers into tangible outcomes over the holiday period.”
