To help ease road congestion and encourage the use of public transport, the City of Perth will take a phased approach to changing its current off-street parking fees and reinstating on-street parking fees from 20 July 2020.

As Western Australia enters Phase 5 of the State Government’s Roadmap and more workers head into the city for work, Main Roads WA and Department of Transport data indicates Western Australians are opting to drive than use public transport.
Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said the City’s initiative would reduce current city traffic congestion, encourage people to use public transport and make it easier for shoppers and visitors to access city businesses.
He said the free three-hour parking trials on the weekend at His Majesty’s, Pier Street and Perth Cultural Centre and the one-hour free parking trials on Hay Street in East Perth and West Perth and Royal Street in East Perth would still continue.
“Main Roads WA data suggests the City’s current fee structure of $10 a day at CPP carparks is encouraging commuters to travel by car,” Chair Commissioner Andrew Hammond said.
“With a large proportion of city workers and commuters currently parking in the City’s carparks, the City has also received feedback from city businesses that shoppers and other short-term parkers are finding it very difficult to find parking.
“In addition to reducing congestion by encouraging commuters back on to public transport, it is envisaged this initiative, on top of the free parking trials, will provide shoppers with better access to parking, therefore supporting local business.”
