City releases concept plans for new Elmore public toilets and changing place

A concept plan for new accessible public toilets at Elmore’s Railway Place featuring four unisex cubicles and a Changing Place is now available to view on the City of Greater Bendigo’s Let’s Talk website.

Acting Property Manager Janyce McMurtrie said the City was committed to providing accessible public toilet facilities in line with its Public Toilet Strategy.

“The existing Elmore public toilets, which were constructed in the 1960s, no longer meet current accessibility standards and are not compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (1992),” Ms McMurtrie said.

“The proposed new facility will be inclusive and accessible for people of all ages and abilities by incorporating a Changing Place and four fully accessible unisex cubicles. This will help provide ultimate flexibility for the community by not needing to wait for an available cubicle and the design of the four accessible unisex cubicles will provide more space to support parents with young children, carers and elderly people.

“Changing Places are important because they provide facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

“The addition of a Changing Place will be fantastic for Elmore, as it will allow people who require such a facility to plan their trip and stop in the township when travelling which could hold great economic benefits for local business and attractions.

“This is a considerable investment in the Elmore community and the concept plans can be viewed and comments provided on the City’s Let’s Talk Greater Bendigo website, https://letstalkgreaterbendigo.com.au/elmore-toilets, until Monday February 28, 2022.”

The new facilities will be built on the existing footprint of the old toilets and portable toilets would be in place throughout the duration of the build, which is expected to take place from November 2022 to July 2023.
