Transformation of the Abbott Park drain is planned as part of a stormwater improvement project to demonstrate the benefits of naturalised waterways.
Residents can contribute ideas towards the proposed concept which will include re-purposing and recycling existing materials, re-planting trees for shade and creating habitat.
“Our urban waterways play an integral role with managing stormwater, enhancing biodiversity and improving recreational areas,” said Mayor Tom Tate.
“If the project proves successful it could lead to improvements at other highly modified waterways, providing more trees and cleaner water flowing into our creeks, rivers and the ocean.”
The project is part of the City’s Water Strategy which aims to transition the Gold Coast to a water sensitive city which will deliver social and environmental benefits.
A pop-up community event will be held at Abbott Park, Parkwood on 9 December from 8am-12pm.
The community can share concept ideas, talk to experts, speak to City officers and enjoy a coffee. There will also be free interactive activities for the kids.
