The City of Mount Gambier is encouraging residents, community groups, schools and local businesses to take part in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1 March 2026, supporting the nation’s largest community based environmental initiative.
Clean Up Australia Day has inspired millions of Australians to take action to protect their local environment by reducing litter, conserving natural spaces and encouraging long‑term behavioural change.
City of Mount Gambier Environmental Sustainability Business Partner Aaron Izzard said the annual event provides a simple but meaningful way for the community to contribute.
“Clean Up Australia Day is an opportunity for everyone to make a tangible difference. By giving just a small amount of your time, you can help reduce litter, protect wildlife, and contribute to a cleaner and more welcoming city,” Mr Izzard said.
The Clean Up Australia movement began in 1989 when founder Ian Kiernan AO mobilised 40,000 volunteers to clean up Sydney Harbour, sparking a national and global initiative. Today, the organisation continues to focus on litter reduction, waste prevention and long‑term environmental stewardship.
As part of the 2026 Clean Up Australia Day activities, residents are invited to join the Love Where You Live – Mount Gambier City Centre Clean‑Up, hosted by the City of Mount Gambier.
The local event will begin at 10:00am on Sunday 1 March 2026, with volunteers meeting outside the Civic Centre before heading out together to clean up public spaces throughout the city centre.
Everyone is welcome to participate. All clean‑up supplies will be provided, with volunteers asked to bring comfortable clothing, closed‑in shoes, a drink bottle and a positive, can‑do attitude.
“As a community, we take great pride in Mount Gambier. This is a chance to come together, care for our shared spaces and celebrate what makes our city such a great place to live,” Mr Izzard said.
