Got old paint tins gathering dust in the shed? A mystery bottle of pool chemicals you’re not quite sure what to do with? Or a collection of batteries, oils and cleaners that definitely shouldn’t go in the bin?
Eurobodalla’s annual Household Chemical Cleanout is back on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, giving residents a free and safe way to clear out unwanted household chemicals.
Council’s waste services manager Nathan Ladmore said the annual cleanout was an easy opportunity to deal with potentially hazardous items properly.
“If you’ve got old paint, fuel, pesticides or chemicals sitting around because you’re not sure what to do with them, bring them along,” Mr Ladmore said.
“It’s free, it keeps hazardous materials out of our bins and environment, and you get some space back in the shed. It’s a win-win.
“Last year we collected more than 14 tonnes of solvents, fuels, pesticides and other chemicals, plus 2,424 individual items like gas bottles and fire extinguishers. There’s clearly plenty of this stuff hiding in garages and cupboards across Eurobodalla.”
Residents can bring paint and paint products, household cleaners, pool chemicals, medicines, pesticides, fuels, gas cylinders, smoke detectors, batteries, vapes and sharps for safe disposal.
The cleanout will run from 8am to 3pm on:
- Saturday 10 October: Gundary Oval car park, Campbell Street, Moruya
- Sunday 11 October: Narooma Library car park, Graham Street, Narooma
- Sunday 11 October: Hanging Rock boat ramp, Beach Road, Batemans Bay
Mr Ladmore said residents also didn’t need to wait for the annual event to clear out many common problem items.
“Our Community Recycling Centre at Surf Beach Waste Management Facility accepts many of these items free of charge all year round,” Mr Ladmore said.
“So if the cupboard under the sink is getting a little too chemistry-lab-ish, you can deal with it safely without waiting until October.”
