Kiama Council has finished the second stage of the Kiama Coastal Management Program (CMP): the technical studies needed to underpin stage three and four of the Program.

Director Environmental Services Jessica Rippon said the technical studies were a critical part of developing a science-based approach to managing our open coastal areas and guide future decision making and planning.

“This stage has involved an extensive amount of work to identify, analyse and evaluate coastal hazards and the risks they pose to our coastline,” Ms Rippon said.

“The results will allow us to move to the next stage, which is looking at how we manage and mitigate, as far as possible, these coastal hazards and risks.”

The Stage 2 – Technical Report is available on Council’s website:

Ms Rippon said stage three would see extensive community consultation as part of assessing these management options, as well as consultations with relevant government agencies and other organisations.

“The consultations will be held from June 2022 onwards and involve meetings with agencies, conversations our community and opportunities on proposed options.”

“Once finalised, the CMP will provide a 10-year management program for the open coastal areas of our municipality.”

It is important to note that management of coastal estuaries and rivers are guided by existing coastal zone management plan and do not form part of this plan.

These will be updated after the CMP is developed.
