Cocktail Party by Pool event to create festive cheer

The culinary expertise of four of the city’s top chefs will again come together as part of a fundraising event to support the Mayor’s Annual Christmas Cheer Appeal.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning this morning launched the annual appeal poolside at the Pullman Cairns International Hotel, where this year’s 5-star Chefs for Charity event will be held next month.

The 5-Star Chefs for Charity annual event was initiated in 2020 as the signature fundraiser for the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, featuring dishes prepared by the executive chefs from Hilton Cairns, Pullman Cairns International, Shangri-La and the Pullman Reef Casino.

“The Cairns community is renowned for pulling together to help people who need a little extra support, and the success of this event is testament to that generous spirit,” Cr Manning said.

“The past three 5-star Chefs for Charity events have raised about $120,000 for the mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, and it would be great if we could get that total up to $150,000 at this year’s event,” Cr Manning said.

“Of course, events like this just don’t happen.

“Along with the four hotels, I want to acknowledge the support of Wolf Lane Distillery, as well as other suppliers, our media partners, and all those people and businesses who have supported this event.”

Guest attending the gala Cocktail Party by the Pool on Saturday 12 August are encouraged to dress in something reflecting the “underwater” theme.

“This year we are changing the format from a sit-down meal to a cocktail party, which will keep it fresh and engaging, especially for those people who have supported the past three events,” Cr Manning said.

“In the spirit of the tropics, we’ve gone with an underwater theme this year, so I am sure we will see plenty of aquas and blues, and hopefully some novel ideas in keeping with fun ambience of the event.

“There will be cocktails, canapes, live entertainment, as well as fundraising auctions, so be sure to bring the credit card.”

Fundraising for the 2023 Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal, which provides food hampers for those in need during the festive season, swung into action last week with the staging of the Charity Golf Day at Cairns Golf Club.

“It was a fantastic day, there was plenty of fun had by all, and importantly, more than $22,000 raised for the appeal.”

Cr Manning said 750 hampers were packed and distributed in 2022, with a similar number expected to be required this year.

“We are setting ourselves a lofty fundraising target of $80,000 for this year’s appeal, which will allow us to again provide food hampers to families and older residents in need.

Community donations to the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Appeal can be made online at Council’s website until 1 December.
