Commission of Enquiry into Child Sexual Abuse

The West Coast Council fully supports the current Commission of Enquiry into child sexual abuse within government facilities. Recent testimony highlighted the issues faced by social workers when working to support children in identified high risk situations and the lack of adequate action in protecting them. The West Coast Council strongly advocates for improved services in this area, and in particular, regional areas such as the West Coast.

West Coast Mayor, Shane Pitt said “It is essential that the children of the West Coast have access and support within our local schools. They must be able to seek the help they may require, and to have confidence that by coming forward they will be supported, with their safety considered the priority. West Coast children are already faced with restrictions to public transport, health service delivery, and youth support groups and services. Services such as the provision of social workers are therefore essential in ensuring that children have an avenue to access the support services they may need to engage. The enquiry outcomes and recommendations will be welcomed and a positive step forward in this area.”
