Commonwealth Avenue Road Closures For Light Rail Works

Sections of Commonwealth Avenue will be closed at times in June to allow for critical works to extend Canberra’s light rail network from the city to Commonwealth Park.

From 8pm Thursday 11 June to 5am Monday 15 June (weather permitting), Commonwealth Avenue northbound will be closed between the Parkes Way off-ramp and Vernon Circle. Detours will be in place.

Travel on Commonwealth Avenue southbound will be reduced to a single lane between Vernon Circle and Albert Street East. Travel on Commonwealth Avenue northbound will be reduced to one lane between Albert Street West to the Parkes Way on ramp.

From 8pm Friday 12 June to 5am Monday 15 June (weather permitting), Albert Street West will be closed. During this time, access to Albert Street East will remain open.

Further contingency days are planned for the following week if the work is unable to be completed due to wet weather.

Intermittent lane modifications and some lane reductions will also be in place during June on Commonwealth Avenue northbound between the Parkes Way on ramp and Vernon Circle and on Northbourne Avenue between Vernon Circle and Rudd/Bunda Streets.

Additional closures will be required during the year to allow work to proceed safely.

Stormwater works, installing streetlights, the delivery of oversized rail materials and ongoing construction of the City South and Commonwealth Park light rail stops is planned to continue during the coming weeks.

Major construction works on Light Rail Stage 2A are expected to be completed in early 2027, followed by testing and commissioning ahead of services starting in early 2028.

Plan ahead

These temporary changes will impact how people travel to and around the city. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, follow all detours and traffic control, and check live travel conditions before travelling.
