Limestone Coast’s Brevet Sergeant Nigel Luders has been named the 2026 South Australia Police Officer of the Year, recognised for his exceptional leadership, deep community involvement and long‑standing commitment to regional policing.
The annual award, presented by the Rotary Club of Unley in partnership with South Australia Police (SAPOL), celebrates officers who make a lasting and profound impact on community safety, wellbeing and development.
Widely regarded in Kingston as a trusted frontline leader and community cornerstone, Brevet Sergeant Luders is known for his calm operational command, strong local relationships and genuine care for the people he serves.
Commissioner of Police Grant Stevens congratulated Brevet Sergeant Luders on the honour, acknowledging his influence across the Limestone Coast.
“Across his 22‑year career, Nigel has consistently demonstrated professionalism, compassion and an unwavering commitment to his community,” Commissioner Stevens said.
“His leadership during critical incidents, his dedication to mentoring others and his strong community partnerships reflect the exemplary qualities recognised through this award.”
Brevet Sergeant Luders said he was “very humbled” to receive the award.
“Being a part of the community and getting involved is a key component… just being there when people need you even out of work time,” he said.
He acknowledged the Rotary Club of Unley, former Deputy Commissioner John White, Limestone Coast leadership, Kingston Mayor Jeff Pope and his family for their support.
Beginning his SAPOL career in 2004, Brevet Sergeant Luders has worked across Holden Hill, Para Hills, Golden Grove, Elizabeth, Berri and Renmark before becoming Officer in Charge at Kingston SE Police Station. He has also spent eight years as a post trainer, mentoring officers across the Limestone Coast.
His community involvement spans local sporting clubs, school engagement through Kingston Community School and strong partnerships with the Lions Club, National Trust and Kingston District Council.
He recently began training as a volunteer Ambulance Officer, continuing his commitment to service beyond policing.
Brevet Sergeant Luders played a major role in the 18‑month planning and delivery of the Mounted Constable Harry Pearce memorial, describing it as a meaningful reminder of the sacrifices police make to keep communities safe.
He has led responses to major incidents including serious and fatal collisions, bushfires and marine rescues, known for his strategic planning and ability to support communities through trauma.
“Understanding why I joined the police force in the first place and making an impact to help others within the community makes me content,” he said.
The award was presented today at the Royal Adelaide Show by Rotary Club of Unley President David Middleton, District 9510 Governor Tim Mee and Commissioner Stevens.
President Middleton commended Brevet Sergeant Luders’ achievements and the long‑standing partnership between Rotary and SAPOL.
“The quality of officers nominated continues to honour and exemplify the contribution South Australia Police makes to our state communities,” he said.
“Rotary is very pleased to make this award to Brevet Sergeant Nigel Luders – a dedicated police officer worthy of such recognition.”
