Community decides Canberra’s newest school name

The ACT community has chosen the name, logo and uniform for its newest public school, set to open its doors for preschool to year 6 students at the start of 2022 in the suburb of Throsby.

The ACT Government is committed to every child having a place at a great public school, and with the opening of the ACT’s 90th public school just around the corner, the local community has already shown their connection to the school.

I’m happy that the Canberra community could contribute to this important decision, even through lockdown, and are already engaged with our newest school.

The community provided their feedback using the YourSay online voting system. The community’s responses helped to finalise these important aspects of the school’s identity. The community voted for:

School Name: Throsby School

School Uniform: Eucalyptus leaf design

The community has chosen to name the school after Charles Throsby. A surgeon and explorer, Throsby explored the country around Lake Bathurst, Lake George, and the Murrumbidgee River in 1820. He followed the Molonglo and Queanbeyan Rivers, starting from Lake George to arrive in the present day Australian Capital Territory in 1821. The suburb of Throsby was named after him in 1992.

The name of the school was selected from a shortlist of distinguished Australians, and I would like to thank the families of all the shortlisted people for allowing the ACT Government to name a school in honour of one of these eminent Australians.

The school logo and uniform was chosen from four design concepts which were based on the natural habitat of the region.

As well as providing for the educational needs of our young people, our schools are also important hubs for the local community and provide facilities for many of our local clubs and groups.

Throsby School will provide additional community facilities for the area and will include a community room and kitchenette, multipurpose double gym, sports courts and change-room facilities, outdoor turf sports field and outdoor multipurpose hardcourts for everyone to enjoy.

I look forward to the first day of the 2022 school year, welcoming new students to all our schools across the ACT, and particularly the first students at Throsby School, ACT’s 90th public school.
