To commemorate the one-year anniversary of last year’s significant flood event, Moira Shire Council invites the community to come together to reflect, connect and heal from the on-going effects of the flood.

A special event will be held on Wednesday 8 November at the Nathalia Recreation Reserve. From 4pm to 7.30pm Council, alongside the community, will be commemorating this journey, recognising the challenges our community has faced, pay tribute to those affected, acknowledge the strength of the community and look forward to the future with hope and determination.

Community will be able to enjoy a free barbecue dinner and family friendly activities such as a jumping castle and face painting. A special art exhibition will be presented on the day featuring work from Nathalia Primary School, Grainstore Nathalia and local artist Phillippa Schapper.

Special guest Dr Rob Gordon, renowned disaster trauma specialist will deliver an address on the resilience and healing in the face of adversity.

Moira Shire Council Administrator Suzanna Sheed said the event would allow members of the community to come together to not only reflect on the event, but also find the strength and resources to continue moving forward.

“Now 12 months on, the flood recovery continues and not just in a physical sense, the impacts of the flood are long-lasting, affecting our physical infrastructure, economic, social and health and wellbeing of our communities,” said Ms Sheed.

“Our residents are very resilient and this is a moment to come together to continue to support one another, share stories, connect resources and help each other on this path of healing.”

Moira Shire Council would like to acknowledge the contributions of the Australian and Victorian Governments who have jointly funded the Community Recovery Hub which has worked to support the communities dealing with the impacts of the flood and help build resilience and preparedness for future events.
