Local food relief organisations can access new government funding to continue their vital work in supporting vulnerable Tasmanians.
The Rockliff Liberal Government is launching its first Tasmanian Community Food Relief Grants Program, with a total funding pool of $300,000 over two years.
Minister for Community Services and Development, Nic Street, said the grants will support community food relief organisations to reduce the rate of food insecurity in their local communities.
“The first round of this program will provide $150,000 for Tasmanian food relief organisations to apply for grants of up to $10,000 each,” he said.
“The grant program is designed to help Tasmanians by funding existing food relief organisations to provide no-cost and low-cost food through both hampers and ready-to-eat meals.
“The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to ensuring all Tasmanians have access to healthy and nutritious food.”
Minister Street said, since 2018, the Tasmanian Government has provided more than $9 million toward the delivery of food relief across the State and had increased its investment in statewide emergency food relief providers by 20 per cent.
“We recognise that food security is more important now than ever. We know many Tasmanian household budgets are stretched, and we know that we need to ensure there are multiple ways for Tasmanians to access healthy and nutritious food, particularly for those who need help.
“That is why we have invested an additional $2 million through the Food Relief to Food Resilience Action Plan to help ensure Tasmanians have access to sufficient, quality and nutritious food.”
Tasmanian food relief organisations can apply for the grants from Thursday.
