Community giveaway to celebrate National Tree Day

Kempsey Shire Council, in partnership with Macleay Landcare Network, will be giving away native plants and winter vegetable seedlings to residents as part of Planet Ark’s 2019 National Tree Day.

Residents will be able to green their gardens by collecting up to two free plants each from Council’s courtyard in Tozer Street, West Kempsey on Friday, 26 July from 10:30am until 1:30pm.

“Council is proud to support Australia’s largest community-tree planting and nature care event again this year,” said Coordinator Civic Services, Steve Pellen.

“The giveaway is a great opportunity for residents to come along and grab a couple of plants, get outside and green their own gardens while doing something good for the environment.”

The giveaway will be on a first in, first served basis until stocks run out. Residents will need to show proof of residence in the Kempsey Shire.

There will also be an opportunity for residents to go into a draw to win a citrus fruit tree on the day.

Council are also donating citrus fruit trees, native trees and mixed vegetable seedlings to 35 schools and preschools across the Kempsey Shire to celebrate Schools Tree Day. The Macleay Landcare Network is also offering schools free on-site advice and extra native trees to ensure all Schools Tree Day events are a success.

“The trees and vegetables to be planted provide healthy food choices for students, environmental benefits and an opportunity to participate in beautifying our valley,” Mr Pellen said.

Council encourages the community to take part in National Tree Day events including the Macleay Landcare Network’s community tree planting at East Kempsey on Thursday, 1 August from 1:00pm to 3:30pm.
