Community information relating to coronavirus

As at 13 March 2020 there were 36 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Victoria. However, the number of cases is expected to increase significantly.

All levels of government including local government are planning for and responding to the impacts of the virus.

For those wanting more information about coronavirus and how to reduce your risk of catching the virus, this webpage is a great resource, provided and regularly updated by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

DHHS advises these 10 ways to reduce your risk of coronavirus:

• Wash hands often with soap and running water, for at least 20 seconds. Dry with paper towel or hand dryer.

• Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow.

• Isolate yourself at home if you feel sick. If you take medication ensure you have adequate supplies.

• Phone your GP first if you need medical attention. They will tell you what to do.

• Continue healthy habits: exercise, drink water, get plenty of sleep, and now is the time to quit smoking. Call the Quitline 137 848.

• Don’t wear a face mask if you are well.

• Buy an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with over 60 per cent alcohol.

• Get the flu shot (available April).

• Shaking hands is optional!

The situation and how it will affect our community is changing quickly and we are working calmly to adapt to circumstances as we receive advice from Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

The health and safety of our community is our top priority and we will keep you informed.

Will there be any interruption to Council services?

At this stage, all Council services will continue as normal, apart from some events and gatherings that may be affected. We will update you if there are any changes. Please keep checking this webpage for the latest information about council services.

Are there any cancellations of events?

The Coalition of Australian Governments announced on Friday 13 March that gatherings of larger than 500 people should not take place after Monday 16 March. Some future events will need to be cancelled and/or adjusted. Please keep checking Council’s website and social media for any news.

What actions have you taken to help ensure community wellbeing in public spaces?

We are providing hand sanitiser at customer service centres, libraries and other sites for members of the public wherever possible (subject to availability of hand sanitiser). We are also reaching out to some community groups to discuss the potential impact of coronavirus on community activities.

What do I do if I suspect I have the coronavirus?

DHHS has issued a self-assessment information sheet available here (insert link). If you suspect you may have the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), please call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398 or phone your GP.
