Community invited to attend Volunteers Week celebrations

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks said the events are a way to celebrate National Volunteers Week (Monday 16 May to Sunday 22 May) which is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.

“To show our appreciation to local volunteers, we are inviting the community to be a part of the National Volunteers Week events across the Shire,” Cr Binks said.

“Attendees will be given a movie ticket to the Euroa Community Cinema, which is scheduled to re-open soon, and a thank you card from me acknowledging their significant contribution to their community.”

The events will be held on:

  • Monday May 16 at Violet Town Bowls Club from 3pm featuring a comedian and a free afternoon tea. Please note the bar will be open selling drinks.
  • Tuesday May 17 at Avenel Bowls Club from 11am featuring the Larks and Ukulele groups and a free luncheon.
  • Wednesday May 18 at Euroa Third Age Club from 1.30pm featuring an afternoon tea.
  • Friday May 20 at the Nagambie Bowls Club from 4pm featuring the Larks and Ukulele groups.

Cr Binks explained why volunteering was so important for community spirit.

“There are so many great benefits from taking a few moments out of your week, month or year to put towards making a real impact on the people and world around you,” she said.

“Volunteering is all about making a difference in your community; it also benefits you personally as it offers the chance to act on your values, passions and interests while making new friendships and create professional networks.

“It’s a great way to gain work experience and learn new skills for a variety of different ages.

“Studies have also shown volunteering makes us healthier and happier as it pushes you to challenge yourself in a supportive environment while making a difference to your community.”

Cr Binks said there was a volunteering opportunity for everyone.

“Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes, particularly at Strathbogie Shire Council where we have a variety of volunteering opportunities,” she said.
