Geelong residents will have the opportunity to shape their city’s public spaces after Council last night endorsed the draft Public Realm Framework for community engagement.
The framework focuses on our local activity centres and the streets, plazas and civic gathering spaces within them. These are places where people shop, work, meet, dine and spend time together.
Greater Geelong is experiencing rapid population growth, with more diverse housing and infill development directed into these local activity centres. That puts increased pressure on these public spaces to support higher density living and deliver better everyday experiences.
Public realm design plays a critical role in shaping how these centres feel and function. It influences local identity and character, whether they are comfortable to walk around, spend time in and meet up with friends in and, importantly, the success of local businesses.
The draft Public Realm Framework is based on initial community consultation and stakeholder feedback. Council has endorsed the document for public exhibition, giving the community an opportunity to provide feedback before a final version is presented for adoption.
The framework will help guide future investment and decision-making for streets, plazas and civic spaces within local activity centres across the municipality.
