Shellharbour City Council is inviting the community to help choose a name for the currently unnamed laneway off Russell Street in Albion Park, with voting now open on five shortlisted names.
The laneway naming project attracted strong community interest, with 247 submissions received from 210 community members, generating a wide range of ideas that reflected local history, identity, flora, fauna and community connections.

Following a review of submissions against Council and NSW road naming requirements, five compliant names have been shortlisted for public voting.
The shortlisted names are:
- Village Lane
- Community Lane
- Merrigong Lane
- Matilda Lane
- Melmoth Lane
Mayor Chris Homer said the response demonstrated the community’s pride in Albion Park and its local heritage.
“The level of community participation has been fantastic and shows just how connected people are to the places they call home,” Mayor Homer said.
“We received a diverse range of thoughtful suggestions, many reflecting Albion Park’s history, community spirit and unique character.”
“Now we’re encouraging residents to take the next step and vote for the name they believe best represents this part of our city.”
Naming the laneway will support future addressing, improve navigation, and assist emergency services and visitors in locating properties more easily and safely.
Community voting is open until 31 August 2026, after which the preferred name will be considered as part of the final naming process.
