Community led place-making initiative launches in Whitehorse

From 1 December, residents, business and community groups can drive local activations as part of a program to revitalise and reconnect Whitehorse communities and shopping precincts.

City of Whitehorse Mayor, Cr Andrew Munroe said that the ‘activation pods’, located at Box Hill Mall, Britannia Mall and Brentford Square, will help reinvigorate public spaces.

“As businesses start to reopen and people venture out, we’re encouraging people rediscover our local gems to embrace our shopping precincts and public spaces,” said Cr Munroe.

“This initiative recognises that our community, people and businesses, make Whitehorse vibrant and welcoming – so they are the key to creating engaging and inviting public places.”

Community members can book the pods online through Council’s website. Activations can include workshops, speaker events, education or group activities that bring the community together.

“I hope to see a variety of activations that will appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds,” said Cr Munroe.

“We have also established a dedicated ‘Activation Booster Fund’ to help individuals or non-incorporated groups make their place-making ideas into a reality.”

The activation pods in Box Hill Mall underwent an upgrade, transforming them from grey shells into colourful, attractive spaces people will want to visit. Eye-catching murals, quality outdoor furniture, as well as bright and colourful signs are part of the revamp.

“The pods and activations will create fantastic opportunities for people to reconnect with old friends, and maybe make some new ones,” added Cr Munroe.

“Getting people back to our shops and eateries for a bumper summer trade is also vital for local businesses, many of whom have been doing it tough this year.”

Council will be hosting community gatherings to help establish and promote the new activation pods. The first Council gathering will take place in February, at Britannia Mall, Mitcham.
