Mitchell Shire Council is holding a National Tree Day event in Seymour on Sunday 30 July.
Council has been supporting National Tree Day since 2001, planting more than 94,000 native grasses, shrubs and trees on Council land and at local schools.
It is also developing a draft Urban Forest Strategy that aims to capture how and where people want to see trees utilised in townships and neighbourhoods throughout the Shire.
Council recently sought feedback on what people value most about trees in their neighbourhood, where they want to see trees planted and how to protect important trees on public and private property.
Nature was identified as a key theme in the Mitchell 2050 Community Vision, with the community setting a goal that “our natural reserves will be home to a rich ecological system supporting our important native flora and fauna.”
Feedback also indicated a strong desire for large canopy shade trees and beautification by adding colour with tree selections.
To assist in achieving these goals, Council is organising two activities:
- A tour of the new Seymour Resource Recovery Centre to see how waste gets sorted for reuse and recycling from 9.30am to 10am.
- Planting around the dam at the Resource Recovery Centre to improve water quality and create a habitat for native wildlife from 10am to 12pm.
All community members are welcome to join the planting day at Seymour Resource Recovery Centre, 470 Seymour-Tooborac Road, Hilldene.
Please bring suitable footwear and gloves
Local community groups are leading the way and have also registered their own National Tree Day events.
