The streets of Berrima were buzzing with roving entertainment, dozens of classic cars rolling into town, and a crowd of 4,000-5,000 enjoying the village charm and community spirit on Australia Day. It was a busy day for local businesses, with Berrima Gaol being particularly popular, and venues including Berrima Bakehouse, Berrima Vault House, Surveyor General Inn and Schmokin bringing special food offerings and entertainment to the village experience.
The morning Citizenship Ceremony was well attended, where it was announced that Wingecarribee’s 2024 Citizen of the Year is in fact a dynamic duo, Uta and Dennis Purcell. Champion for charity fundraisers, Mackenzie Isedale, was awarded Young Citizen of the Year.
Our Shire’s Australia Day Ambassador, Ms Robina Beard OAM, who became a household name Australia-wide as Madge the Manicurist in an iconic Palmolive dishwashing liquid commercial, joined in the midday Grand Parade. Community groups marching in the parade were greeted by a jovial atmosphere with many lining the streets to cheer on The First Light Horse Brigade, Highlands Pipes & Drums, RFS and CWA, among others. Dozens of classic cars added colour and excitement to the spectacle.
“This is an important event for the Berrima Village community, and it was wonderful to see such a great turn-out to Berrima Village at a time of year when it can be very quiet due to the Summer holiday break,” says Suzanne Hannema, Coordinator Tourism and Events for Destination Southern Highlands.” It’s a timely boost for local businesses and got the year underway with a real sense of community spirit for everyone who took part.”
Market Place Park came alive with Market stalls, carnival rides, live music and many a picnic blanket.
“Many community members took the opportunity to visit Council’s pop-up during the day to connect with some of our team and on the whole, they were excited to see the parade and festivities back in Berrima for Australia Day,” Suzanne says. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Berrima Village Community on this much-loved Southern Highlands tradition.
