Community survey for New Year’s Eve festivities

Devonport City Council Tasmania

Devonport will get into the festive spirit this Christmas and New Year with a focus on community and around-the-world celebrations.

Mayor Annette Rockliff said Devonport City Council is also looking for feedback, through an online survey, to get a clearer picture of what the community would like.

Cr Rockliff said, since the survey opened two weeks ago, respondents so far had indicated they like the family-focussed events, with activities such as live music and Street Eats.

“Given how the events scene has changed over the past few years, Council is focussed on providing events that are in the best interest of our community,” Cr Rockliff said.

“Last year’s Santa Tour was a big hit and will be held again from 20-22 December with Santa and his entourage visiting various locations throughout Devonport.

“With world travel being put on hold for many people, Council has looked at a way to celebrate Devonport’s multicultural community for New Year’s Eve with a free event in Market Square titled ‘Around the World’.

“From 3pm until 8pm, families can experience flavours and activities from different corners of our globe. Children will be given a passport which can be stamped at each country they visit.”

Cr Rockliff said local band The Collection will entertain the crowd and there will be food trucks and children’s activities.

“With the festivities finishing up at 8pm, patrons have the opportunity to support local businesses, who have indicated their support of this year’s format,” Cr Rockliff said.

“We appreciate that the lack of fireworks on New Year’s Eve has been disappointing for some, but Council felt the funds could be better spent in providing a free event for the community.

“Council is keen to hear from residents, particularly the 12-25 age group on what types of activities and entertainment they would like to experience at the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“I encourage everyone to please take five minutes to complete the survey.”

The annual Family Fun Fair will also be held on New Year’s Eve at the Devonport Oval from 6pm-9pm.
