An 87-year-old man is safe and sound after strong community connections assisted Canterbury Police in the search to locate the lost fisherman near Lake Tekapo.
About 8.15pm yesterday Southern Police Communications received a 111 call from the man, who had become disoriented after a fishing trip with his dog near the Cass River Mouth.
While the man was dressed warmly, Police were concerned he was not equipped to spend the night outdoors in the cold conditions.
Police Land Search and Rescue were notified, however while response efforts were being coordinated, it became apparent the man required more urgent assistance.
This resulted in Police contacting local Farm Manager Grant Murray, who knows the area well, and he agreed to assist in the search.
Police remained on the phone with the 87-year-old, encouraging him to keep himself moving to stay warm and provided reassurance while efforts were under way to locate him.
After 35 minutes on the phone, the lost man was successfully located by Mr. Murray.
The man, and his trusty dog, safely returned home where he was able to warm up and get some well-earned rest.
This incident highlights the value of strong relationships between local Police and the communities we serve, and Canterbury Police would like to thank everyone who was involved in the search.
