The Minns Labor Government’s review of the Community Transport Program must be used to deliver more services for regional communities, not become an excuse to cut routes, funding, or access.
Three-quarters of Community Transport Program trips are made outside Sydney which shows just how important these services are to regional NSW.
Shadow Minister for Regional Roads and Transport and Nationals Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole, said community transport was a lifeline for thousands of people across regional NSW, particularly older residents, people living with disability, and those who cannot drive or access regular public transport.
“In regional NSW, community transport isn’t a luxury. For many people it is the only way they can get to a medical appointment, do their shopping, or remain connected to their community,” Mr Toole said.
“Regional communities need assurance from the Minister that this review will not become a cost-cutting exercise.
“We should be looking at how we can provide more frequent services and better connections, particularly for people travelling long distances for health care.”
Mr Toole said regional providers, councils, health services, and passengers should have a strong voice throughout the review.
“Community transport providers are also dealing with increasing fuel, vehicle, insurance, maintenance, and staffing costs. Any review must listen to the people actually delivering these services on the ground.
“Labor should make it clear from the outset that this is about building a stronger community transport network not finding savings at the expense of regional passengers.”
