Como Park ready for return to sport

Wet weather was not enough to dampen the spirits of Stonnington Mayor Cr Jami Klisaris and North Ward Councillor Matthew Koce, who braved the elements to recognise the completion of the Como Park oval redevelopment works.

Visiting the park on a very rainy July afternoon, with umbrellas in hand, Crs Klisaris and Koce took a stroll around the oval before stopping to view a commemorative plaque that acknowledges Council’s investment in this popular sporting and recreation hub.

Taking in the view over the expanse of new turf, Mayor Cr Jami Klisaris was delighted to see the oval back up and running after nearly a year closed for redevelopment works.

“Como Park is one of Stonnington’s premium sports grounds, is home to some of our oldest sporting clubs and is a popular spot for locals to exercise and take the dog for a walk,” said Cr Klisaris.

“Over the past 11 months our project management team has completed significant improvement works – installing new drainage and irrigation systems, resizing the oval and rebuilding the turf cricket wickets, removing all the turf from the oval and replacing it with new drought-tolerant Santa Ana, and renewing the footpath around the oval.

“The improvements to the playing field will be appreciated and enjoyed by the football and cricket clubs who play here – and will ensure the oval is in tip top condition for years to come.

“Completion of the works also means the park is back as a dog off-leash area which I’m sure will be welcome news for many residents.

“On behalf of Council, I thank everyone for the patience and understanding shown as we delivered the park improvements. I hope you enjoy the new, improved Como Park,” Cr Klisaris added.
