The Gold Coast’s newest icon was revealed today with a first look at the striking building facade adorning the $60.5 million HOTA gallery.
Bold, proud and colourful, the facade reflects the Gold Coast’s personality and supports the Masterplan vision for the evolution of the cultural precinct.
Mayor Tom Tate said the building’s unique design would attract locals and visitors alike.
“The distinctive colouring of the façade is reflective of the city’s sub-tropical environment, and will be beautifully comprised of a mixture of glass and aluminium panels,” he said.
“The building design was inspired by Australian artist, William Robinson’s ‘The Rainforest’ – a signature piece from the City’s collection.
“The facade features a voronoi shaped design – a tessellated cell-like pattern seen in nature – and a continuing theme used throughout the cultural precinct.
“There is no doubt in my mind that this gallery will take its place in Australia’s artistic and cultural landscape as a must-see destination.
“We’ve recently completed the $19.5 million Green Bridge connecting HOTA to Chevron Island, so the gallery and broader cultural precinct is even more accessible to the community.
“I’m pleased to say that construction of the gallery is on time and on budget for a 2021 public opening.”
The project is a major economic stimulator for the city and has provided 512 jobs to local workers to date, with this figure set to increase to 1,100 by the time the gallery is completed at the end of the year.
The gallery comprises six storeys, and will offer guests an accessible rooftop with 270 degree views of the city skyline and landscape. A ground floor café and foyer will offer views across the amphitheatre to the Outdoor Stage.
It provides 2000sqm of gallery exhibition space including a 1000 square metre exhibition hall for touring international exhibitions.
The gallery is AAA-rated, a universal standard for art galleries and museums which meet stringent design, build, mechanical and technical requirements.
The gallery’s facade is being installed by local Gold Coast based company Cladding Creations.
