The Carroll Labor Government is building more world class training facilities in Melbourne’s north-west.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Skills and Training Gabrielle Williams and Member for Melton Steve McGhie turned the first sod on Kangan Institute’s new construction-focused campus in Melton, expected to open in 2028.
Kangan Institute will deliver training for building and construction, plumbing and electrical trades to 800 students every year from the new site.
The facility will help meet demand for skilled workers to build our state’s homes and infrastructure.
The campus will feature flexible spaces to support trades training. New facilities will include workshops for construction, gas fitting, welding, refrigeration, and plumbing.
There will also be an emerging technologies lab and a cybersecurity simulation space.
Hutchinson Builders have been selected to build the campus. The new campus was designed by leading design firm Architectus, with input from the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
While the new campus is being built, Kangan Institute will deliver a range of TAFE courses in Melton in partnership with Western Business Accelerator and Centre for Excellence.
Melton is one of Australia’s fastest growing areas - its population is forecast to grow by around 215,000 people between 2025 and 2046. Melton residents currently have no TAFE campuses close to home.
The $55 million for the new campus is being funded through the Labor Government’s Building Better TAFE Fund, which is ensuring students have the best facilities to train in, close to home.
Labor is investing in TAFE facilities, including $25 million for a Kangan Institute campus in Sunbury and $36 million for the Centre of Excellence in Disability Inclusion at The Gordon in Geelong, where the first phase is now complete.
Bendigo TAFE’s new Community Health and Learning Hub in Castlemaine also opened in 2025, delivering more opportunities for students to access quality training close to home.
Victoria’s $16 billion record investment in TAFE is delivering real outcomes for students and employers, with Jobs and Skills Australia confirming that 91 percent of Victorian TAFE learners achieving their employment goal.

As stated by Member for Melton Steve McGhie
