Construction is now complete for the National Water Grid Manton Dam Return to Service project.
This marks one of the most significant water infrastructure milestones in the Northern Territory in 50 years.
The project will provide 7,300 megalitres more water for consumption each year in Darwin.
The project delivered:
- Upgrades to the existing intake tower at Manton Dam’s reservoir.
- The new Strauss Water Treatment Plant. This will treat water so it meets the highest water quality standards.
- A new pump station and 22 km of pipeline. This will deliver water to the Strauss Water Treatment Plant from the reservoir.
Regional benefits
- The new infrastructure will facilitate population growth and deliver sustainable economic development opportunities.
- Manton reservoir is a unique multi-use asset and will remain open for recreation.
- The project engaged more than 111 employees and 500 contractors during construction.
Funding
The Manton Dam Return to Service project is part of the $327.6 million Darwin Region Water Supply Infrastructure Program Stage 1. Stage 1 is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Northern Territory Government.
Manton Dam is expected to be officially connected to the Darwin region water supply system in late 2026.
