A company has been fined nearly $2,000 for allowing its trucks to leave a construction site and track mud and gravel along a public road.
Total Constructions Pty Ltd which has its registered office in NSW, was working at a site in Geelong Rd, Brooklyn in August when it was noticed one of their trucks leaving the site tracked mud and gravel along Geelong Rd.
The depositing of mud and debris from construction sites on to public roads is considered to be a littering offence under the Environmental Protection Act 2017.
“Construction companies must manage their activities and ensure they don’t impact on the public and the environment. Construction debris left behind on roads will wash into storm water drains and end up in our creeks and waterways,” EPA West Metropolitan Manager Steve Lansdell said.
“The fine of $1,923 sends a message to construction businesses that they must be diligent in ensuring their vehicles are not leaving worksites and causing issues like these. They should have had an Environment Management Plan and known how to ensure it was properly used.
“Everyone has to act to protect the environment and Total Construction has just been reminded of that fact.”
