Consultation open on management standards for brominated flame retardant chemicals

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

We are seeking feedback on four proposed scheduling decisions. These decisions will help manage chemicals that pose a high risk to the environment.

These chemicals are flame retardants used in textiles, electronics, and in spare parts used in aircraft and motor vehicles.

Consultation on the proposed scheduling decisions is open from 25 September 2023. These scheduling decisions will set national standards for four brominated flame-retardant chemicals:

  • decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE)
  • octabromodiphenyl ether (octaBDE)
  • pentabromodiphenyl ether (pentaBDE)
  • hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD)

Feedback will help Australian governments and business to manage the environmental risks of these chemicals while allowing essential industrial uses for public safety and other purposes.

To make a submission, visit our consultation hub. Submissions close on 25 October 2023.
