Consumer complaints roll in for the new year

The first Fair Trading Complaints Register for 2019 has been published today, revealing a long list of businesses that consumers have been dissatisfied with.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner, Rose Webb said the January Complaints Register had almost doubled in size this month, after 13 traders appeared in December.

“This month, 24 traders received more than 10 complaints and have featured on the Register,” Ms Webb said.

The Complaints Register once again included a range of businesses across multiple industry’s including travel and accommodation, tech and electronics and real estate.

Kogan topped the Register this month with 70 complaints from consumers and was joined by another seven tech and electronics businesses. The most common complaint across the board for these businesses related to quality of goods.

“Businesses are starting to understand that consumers can use the Register to inform their purchases, so we hope that if they are featured on the list, traders use it as an incentive to improve their service to customers,” Ms Webb said.

The January Complaint Register saw a few new faces enter the Register for the first time, including Urban Couture Design, BBQAddiction.com.au and Ideal Gadget.

“We encourage any business who finds themselves on the Fair Trading Complaints Register, to work with their assigned case manager to resolve any issues with customers and improve their complaint handling procedures,” Ms Webb said.

Consumers experiencing difficulties with a trader should try to resolve the matter directly. If unable to resolve a dispute, consumers should lodge a formal complaint with Fair Trading via the website www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au, or call 13 32 20.
