Continuing to level playing field in Tasmania

Jane Howlett,Minister for Sport and Recreation

The Tasmanian Government is committed to providing more opportunities for women and girls to participate in sport.

In April 2018, we launched the Levelling the Playing Field Fund, a two year $10 million grants program to improve sports facilities for women and girls across Tasmania.

Since the program began, 34 facilities have received funding and today I was delighted to be joined by Waratah-Wynyard Deputy Mayor Mary Duniam to officially open the upgraded change rooms and amenities at the Wynyard Recreation Ground, thanks to a $310,000 grant as part of Levelling the Playing Field.

These new modern facilities will make it easier for the local football and cricket clubs to attract and retain female participants in the future.

In June this year, I was pleased to announce a further $10 million in funding for the Improving the Playing Field Fund, which will provide grants to local councils and sporting clubs to improve playing facilities across Tasmania to ensure strong participation rates across all sporting codes.

This investment will help to support Tasmania’s building and construction sector and create local jobs as the state recovers and rebuilds from COVID-19.
