Continuing to support health of Derwent

Peter Gutwein,Minister for the Environment, Parks and Heritage

Tasmania’s environment is one of our greatest assets and the Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to safeguarding it, preserving what makes our State so special.

I was pleased to sign the fourth Derwent Estuary Program Partnership Agreement today, which continues the Derwent Estuary Program for a further five years as part of our Government’s commitment to protecting the Tasmanian way of life.

Established in 1999 as a regional partnership to restore and promote the Derwent, the Program undertakes a number of monitoring and public awareness activities, including the summer Beach and Bay Watch Program.

The Program is supported by the Tasmanian Government, the six councils that border on the estuary, as well as Nyrstar Hobart, Norske Skog Boyer, TasWater, TasPorts and Hydro Tasmania. The Program is a great example of what can be achieved when governments, industry and the community work together.

The Program is also an excellent source of consolidated data providing important feedback to all parties on the effectiveness of management activities, so better decisions can be made in protecting our environment.
