Works are continuing on West Dapto Road with the project now at 74 per cent complete, and the road pavement works now underway.
The pavement works are focused around the western end, with this being completed in stages across the 1.75-kilometre-long site. The work is being phased to run concurrently with the ongoing drainage works to try to minimise the length of the road closure.
Work continues to move forward on the stormwater pit and pipe works, and much of the street lighting is now largely installed. In addition, the new pedestrian bridge for the road is currently being fabricated offsite ahead of its planned installation next month.
“It can be very difficult in sites like this because, visually, there might not seem to be significant leaps forward in project progression while in reality there has been a lot happening underground through services relocation” Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
“I think residents seeing the road pavement works get underway may feel some assurance that things are moving forward and work is continuing to happen.
“We are doing everything we can to get this road to a point where it can be opened to traffic so that residents can use it while we finish other works on the site.”
Update on the Microbats
Council has also received NSW Department Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water approval of its Microbat Management Plan.
This provides Council with clear direction on the next steps for the relocation of the Southern Myosis microbats who took up residence in a culvert on the site. The threatened species, known for their disproportionally large hairy feet, were discovered as demolition on the culvert got underway.
