Contract awarded for redevelopment of Newman Health Service

  • Redevelopment of new $61.4 million Newman Health Service moves forward with ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd awarded contract for construction
  • More than 300 local jobs to be created with works set to commence later this year
  • New, fully integrated health service expected to be operational by mid-2023
  • The redevelopment of the Newman Health Service is moving forward with the tender for construction awarded to ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd.

The $61.4 million redevelopment, expected to create more than 300 local jobs, includes a

$15 million contribution from BHP Iron Ore (BHP) and will see a new, modern facility established with key health services integrated under one roof to ensure care is available when and where the community needs it.

The new facility includes 12 inpatient beds, six emergency department bays, two dental chairs and six GP consult spaces. There will also be dedicated rooms for outpatient consults, therapy, medical imaging and pathology.

Other health services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, counselling, community health nursing and mental health will also be housed in the new building.

The redevelopment will also support the delivery of modern healthcare by supporting access to Telehealth services and videoconferencing technology that will connect staff and patients to specialists across Western Australia.

The existing facility will remain operational throughout construction. Works will be undertaken across three stages commencing in July 2020, with the first stage of the works (including the construction of the main works) expected to be achieved in the third quarter of 2022, and the subsequent stages expected to be completed and fully operational by mid-2023.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“This Government has remained steadfast in its commitment to ensuring residents of rural and regional Western Australia have access to quality healthcare regardless of their postcode.

“The $61.4 million redevelopment of Newman Health Service is another way we’re delivering on that.

“We know this is something the community want and need, and we’re pleased to work with BHP to deliver this much needed infrastructure project to the Pilbara region.

“The redevelopment of the Newman Health Service will provide considerable opportunities to local businesses during the program of works, providing a boost to the local economy.”

As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:

“The redevelopment of the Newman Health Service is something residents have been eagerly awaiting.

“Improved access to Telehealth services will provide patients with timely care close to home, reducing the need to travel outside the region for specialist appointments or ongoing consultations.

“Integrated health services under one roof will provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive view of their patients’ condition, resulting in a tailored experience for patients and improved health outcomes across the community.”

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

“I’m delighted to see the contract awarded for the new Newman hospital, a project that the Newman community has needed for decades.

“This infrastructure project will create local jobs and boost the local Newman economy, and it will significantly meet the increasing healthcare demands of the region.”
