Coordinating committee advised of saline solution shortage

The IV fluids response group advises that fluids remain in short supply, particularly 1L saline bags. There is some improved availability of smaller bags and Hartmann’s solution.

The National Response Group for IV Fluids has advised that shortages of IV fluids continue and are likely to persist into 2025. Current shortages are particularly affecting supply of 1L bags of saline solution.

IV fluid shortages have been ongoing for most of this year and have recently been exacerbated by hurricanes in the USA.

AMA President, Dr Danielle McMullen, is a member of the response group ensuring that clinician feedback, including that for doctors working outside large hospitals, continues to inform decision-making.

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released an updated fact sheet on conservation strategies and safety considerations.
