Correctional officer charged over alleged ongoing sexual abuse of inmates, NSW

A Corrective Services NSW officer will face court today charged over the alleged ongoing sexual abuse of inmates at a Western Sydney correctional facility.

In October 2018, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Corrective Services Investigation Unit commenced an investigation under Strike Force Nautilus, following reports female inmates had been sexually and indecently assaulted on numerous occasions.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 62-year-old man at a home in Kurrajong Heights just after 9am yesterday (Wednesday 20 February 2019).

The man was taken to Windsor Police Station, where he was charged with six counts of aggravated sexual assault – victim under authority of offender, three counts of aggravated indecent assault – victim under authority of offender, two counts of incite aggravated indecency – victim 16 or over under authority, and misconduct in public office.

Police will allege in court that man sexually assaulted two female inmates at a correctional facility in Berkshire Park on numerous occasions between 2016 and 2017.

He was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court today (Thursday 21 February 2019).

The man’s employment with Corrective Services NSW has since been suspended.

Corrective Services Investigation Unit Commander, Detective Inspector Robert Hollows, commended the work of Strike Force Nautilus detectives.

“Our investigators work closely with Corrective Services NSW to target any corrupt or illegal activity that may occur within these facilities,” he said.

“By taking swift and appropriate action we hope to prevent these types of behaviours which pose a risk to the security of the facilities and the safety of other staff and inmates.”

Investigations under Strike Force Nautilus continue.
