National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a significant time in Australia when all people can deepen their understanding of our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and can explore how each of us contribute to achieving reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples.
NRW marks two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey — the 1967 referendum on 27 May, and the historic Mabo decision on 3 June. NRW happens on these dates every year.
This year’s theme is Grounded in Truth – Walk Together with Courage.
To join in NRW, Council is helping spread the word by sharing information and resources through our communication channels including social media. Council will also hold an internal voluntary “lunch and learn” session offering staff an opportunity to engage in discussions and build on the respectful relationship shared by Aborigines and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.
Council is developing a new Aboriginal and Baw Baw Shire Council Action Plan in the next financial year.
Baw Baw Shire Council acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country that makes up Baw Baw and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to the elders both past and present.
NRW is celebrated by businesses, schools and early learning services, organisations and individuals Australia-wide. Council encourages residents to support and embrace cultural diversity by participating in NRW activities.
