Council adopts long-term plan for Stonnington’s transport future

Council has adopted a new long-term transport strategy to help manage growing pressure on local roads, parking, kerbside space over the next 15 years.

As more people choose to live in Stonnington, demand on roads, parking and public space will continue to increase, making it more important than ever to plan how that limited space is used.

Of course, transport is more than getting from A to B. It’s also how easily and safely people can get to work and school, access local shops and services and stay connected to the people and places that matter most.

As result, Stonnington’s Transport Strategy 2040 focuses on three key areas – improving road safety, supporting sustainable transport and ensuring parking is managed effectively, via three Action Plans.

The Road Safety Action Plan looks to make streets safer for everyone, whether they’re walking, wheeling, riding or driving. This includes things like improving lighting, safer pedestrian crossings, better footpaths and measures to reduce speeding. This sort of work matters because road safety is one of the issues residents raise most often.

The Sustainable Transport Action Plan is about making it easier for people to leave the car at home, so they can safely walk, ride, wheel and use public transport every day. Giving people more transport options can help reduce emissions, ease congestion, and free up space on our roads. It will also help keep Stonnington moving as our population grows.

The Parking Action Plan involves making sure the right mix of parking is available in the right areas, when people need it – whether that’s near homes, jobs, shops, workplaces or local services. As demand increases, Council will focus on ensuring parking works fairly for residents, businesses and visitors.

Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said the strategy and its action plans will help Council strike the right balance between road safety, parking, transport choice and maintaining the liveability of our neighbourhoods.

“Creating more street space isn’t an option, so we need to be smarter about how we use and ensure access to the space we do have,” Cr Sehr said.

“This strategy will help Council continue to shape transport needs to support the people who live, work and spend time in Stonnington as our city grows.”

The final Transport Strategy 2040 was informed by community feedback gathered throughout 2024 and 2025, and submissions received during the recent public exhibition period in July and August of 2026.

“We heard a broad range of views throughout the consultation process, which showed just how much our community cares about these issues,” Cr Sehr said.
