Council Adopts Parking Strategy For Growing City

Shellharbour City Council has adopted the Shellharbour Parking Strategy, providing a long-term framework to help manage public parking across the city’s town centres as Shellharbour continues to grow.

The strategy focuses on improving the way existing public parking is managed to ensure it remains safe, fair and easy to use for residents, visitors, workers and local businesses.

Developed through detailed parking studies and community consultation, the strategy provides a roadmap to guide future parking planning and decision-making across Shellharbour.

During community consultation, residents told Council they wanted parking to be easier to understand, easier to access and better managed in busy areas. The strategy responds to this feedback by focusing on clearer parking arrangements, improved accessibility and making better use of existing parking spaces.

Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the strategy would help Council plan for future growth while maintaining accessible and convenient public parking.

“As our city continues to grow, we want to make sure getting around our town centres remains as easy and convenient as possible for everyone,” Mayor Homer said.

“Whether you’re popping into the shops, heading to work, meeting friends for a coffee or visiting one of our local destinations, parking plays an important role in that experience.”

The strategy focuses on improving the efficiency of existing parking and identifies a range of actions that can be implemented over time, including improvements to parking management, accessibility, wayfinding and support for alternative transport options.

Mayor Homer said the strategy would provide a consistent and evidence-based approach to addressing future parking needs.

“This strategy isn’t just about creating more parking spaces. It’s about making better use of the parking we already have and making it easier for people to find, access and use them,” he said.

“We’re taking a practical, long-term approach that supports local businesses, residents and visitors while helping us prepare for the growth we’re seeing across Shellharbour.”

The Shellharbour Parking Strategy will help inform future planning decisions and infrastructure investment across the city’s town centres over the coming years.
